First day, Karen

This is Thursday afternoon at 5 PM. What a day! My head is swimming. Much adjustments. Bend--don't break. This morning they fixed us scrambled eggs, toast, fresh pineapple juice and coffee. All very good.

Paul gave us orientation and devotional. He challenged us to let God stretch us and use us. The projects are only our tool.

Then at 11:30 the men went to town to exchange money and get supplies to start building the desks. They will be started here on the compound (which is a plot with two houses on it where we are staying. This is also where Abdu's chickens are. It is a walled in place.) The women also went to town. It is about a 5 minute ride to downtown. Several of us went on a jeep like vehicle and the others came by boda-bodas! (Mopeds driven by locals--you pay them and they take you). Downtown is about 5 minutes away. We went shopping with Grace, the cook, at the market, and helped shell fresh black beans for lunch. She showed us the open shops but we had no money yet. Pat found a dress for $15. She may go back. Then we met up with the women who came on the boda-bodas and went through the market again--this time was really stretching with the meat--all kinda like a flea market. Bought groceries at the grocery store and went to a shop where most had a soda and then back home by car and ate lunch at 2:30--the black beans and rice. It was very good!

Then to bed and had a good nap. We were dead tired, but slept well last night and had a good nap. The airplane just was so hard to sleep, but we got by. So many stories already.
